What is geo-targeting in proxies?

Geo-targeting means choosing the country, state or city your proxy request leaves from, so a website shows what local visitors see there.

Websites change by place: prices, language, stock, search results, which adverts run. To see a page as a visitor in Munich does, the request has to come from an address in Munich.

On BooProxies the place is written into the username. A two-letter country code selects the country on most plans. Residential plans can also select a state and a city. Location databases do not always agree with each other, so check an address with more than one before deciding a proxy is in the wrong place.

Targeting narrows the pool. A country has many addresses and a single city far fewer, so tight targeting means meeting the same addresses more often. Use the widest setting that still gives you the content you need.

Questions about geo-targeting

Why does a site still show the wrong country?

Sites also use your account settings, cookies and browser language. Clear cookies or use a fresh browser profile, and check that the country code in the username is right.

Can I target a city?

On BooProxies, residential plans accept a state and a city in the username. Other plans target the country only, and the USA-only plans have no setting at all.

Geo-blocking
Geo-blocking is when a website shows different content, or none at all, depending on the country your IP address is registered in.
Exit IP
The exit IP is the address your request leaves the proxy network from. It is the address the website sees and logs as its visitor.
Residential proxy
A residential proxy sends your traffic through an IP address that belongs to a home internet connection, so websites see an ordinary household visitor.
