What is a residential proxy?

A residential proxy sends your traffic through an IP address that belongs to a home internet connection, so websites see an ordinary household visitor.

Every IP address is registered to a network. A residential address is registered to a home internet provider, the same kind of address a person browsing from their living room has. Websites that filter out servers and bots usually treat these addresses as normal visitors.

Residential proxies are sold by the gigabyte, because each gigabyte travels through a real connection. They are slower and cost more than datacenter proxies, and they are accepted in far more places. On BooProxies the residential pool can be aimed at a country, a state and a city, and can rotate on every request or hold one address for a set time.

Questions about residential proxy

Why do residential proxies cost more than datacenter proxies?

Each request travels over a real household connection, which is slower and scarcer than a line in a datacenter. That is why residential traffic is sold by the gigabyte while datacenter traffic can be sold by time.

Are residential proxies fast?

They are as fast as an ordinary home connection, and the request makes an extra hop to reach it. For large downloads from a target that accepts datacenter addresses, a datacenter proxy is the better tool.

Related terms

Datacenter proxy
A datacenter proxy uses an IP address that belongs to a hosting company. It is fast and cheap, and the easiest kind for a website to recognise.
Mobile proxy
A mobile proxy sends your traffic through an IP address of a phone carrier, on a real 4G or 5G connection. Sites are slowest to block these.
Rotating proxy
A rotating proxy gives each new connection a different IP address from a pool, so no single address makes enough requests to be noticed.
Geo-targeting
Geo-targeting means choosing the country, state or city your proxy request leaves from, so a website shows what local visitors see there.
