How to use a proxy with Charles Proxy

Charles is a debugging proxy for seeing what an app or site sends. It can pass traffic on through an external proxy, which lets you debug a session as it looks from another country.

Proxy settings for Charles Proxy: host, port and login

A BooProxies plan gives you four things: a host, a port, a username and a password. These are the values for Residential; the username and password are on your plan page.

The country and the session are chosen in the username, not in a separate setting. The generator on your plan page writes the username for you, and Targeting and sessions explains each part.

Charles Proxy proxy setup, step by step

  1. Open the Proxy menu and choose External Proxy Settings.
  2. Tick the option to use external proxy servers.
  3. Select the web proxy (HTTP) and the secure web proxy (HTTPS) and enter the host resi.proxies.boo and port 8080 for each.
  4. Tick that the proxy requires a password and enter your username and password.

Menu names can differ a little between versions of Charles Proxy. The four values to enter are always the same.

Rotating or sticky sessions for Charles Proxy?

If Charles Proxy is acting as one visitor through several steps, use a sticky session so the IP address stays the same throughout. If each run is independent, leave the session out and every run starts from a new address.

Charles Proxy proxy not working?

  • Fill in both the HTTP and HTTPS entries. With only the first, https traffic leaves directly from your own connection.
  • A 407 error means the username or password was not accepted. Copy both again from your plan page, and check that nothing added a space or cut the username short.
  • If the IP address is in the wrong country, look at the username: the country code is part of it. More fixes.
