What is IP whitelisting for proxies?

IP whitelisting lets a proxy accept requests from addresses you registered in advance, with no username or password in the request.

You give the proxy service the public IP address of your server or office. From then on, any request from that address is accepted. It is convenient for tools that cannot send a proxy login, and it breaks the moment your own address changes, which home and mobile connections do often.

BooProxies plans sign in with a username and password and do not use an allowlist. If a program only takes a host and a port with no login, a small local forwarder solves it: it listens without a login on your own machine and adds the login on the way out.

The word allowlist means the same thing and is used more and more in its place. Either way the idea is a list of trusted source addresses, kept by the proxy service, that takes the place of a password.

Questions about IP whitelisting

Allowlist or username and password?

A username and password work from anywhere and let the username carry settings such as the country and the session. An allowlist suits one fixed server and tools that cannot send a login. BooProxies uses a login.

What if my tool cannot send a proxy login?

Run a small forwarder on your own machine. The tool connects to it without a login, and the forwarder adds the username and password before passing the request on. The guide linked below shows how.
